Urban Harmonics

A visualization created for the Data Canvas Sense your City project. I wanted to get away from traditional data visualizations that are move towards abstraction and create a piece that emotionally engages the user. The concept is a ‘dating game’ that allows the user to set preferences and tolerances for dust, light, pollution, noise, humidity and temperature. Based on those preferences, cities will move towards the player. The cities also generate dust, smoke, sweat and light based on the data set.

Future plans are to add the motion of the cities, right now they are stationary. The data is coming off the Data Sense servers, but I would like to add a ‘real-time’ option to see finer grain reactions to the data. I plan to also add rollovers to the cities, to see the actual numbers that are generating the amount of dust, smoke, light and sweat. There will also be a WebGL version, once a few bugs are worked out with the json parsing.
